The Château de Fumel has had an important historical role, particularly during the Hundred Years’ War. It was the headquarters of the barony of Fumel. Listed as a historical monument, today it houses the Fumel town hall. Its construction dates from the 14th century. At the foot of the château, you can find the Théâtre de la Nature. Built at the start of the 20th century, it has a capacity of 1,400 seats. It witnesses several performances throughout the year. The town also possesses another château in an adjoining village, the Château de Bonaguil. Also a historical monument, it is situated between Le Périgord and Le Quercy. It is a strong château, on which construction began in the 13th century. The Watt steam engine is one of the last two functioning machines in the world. It dates from the 19th century and extends over more than 10 metres. It was assembled in Fumel and is evidence of the town’s industrial past.
